Zomeracademie (2018)

During the summer of 2018, I participated in the Summer Academy in Destelheide, Dworp.
I followed the Textile and Theatre Costume atelier led by self made designer Anita Evenepoel.

A whole week I was able to immerse myself in my textile work. I got intrigued by the way a fabric is manipulated using the Shibori technique. I folded, sewed and frowned my polyester fabrics in different ways, but instead of colouring them (as is normally done with the Shibori technique), I placed them under a heat press. Afterwards, when the fabric was cooled down, I removed the threads and opened up the pieces and noticed organic yet regular shapes were formed.

To pleat and sew the pieces, I followed a pattern consisting of lines. I began drawing these patterns using different colours and materials. After scanning them, they were printed on the polyester fabric using the sublimation technique (which I also used during my master project).

Therefore, the pattern on my fabric had become both functional and aesthetic. While folding and sewing the fabric piece, I followed the pattern as a guiding line. After the piece was heated, the fresh design and colours made the three-dimensional fabric come to life and added even more depth.
